Plan your beauty business, step by step

Your license prepares you to deliver a service. This page helps you plan the business around it: your work arrangement, your money, your taxes, and the habits behind your decisions. Work through each section and use the free calculators as you go.

In beauty school right now?

Aveda Institutes, Paul Mitchell Schools, and Empire Beauty School all describe business training on their websites. Whatever your program covers, this page helps you turn those lessons into a plan for your own numbers. Ask your campus for its current catalog and business assignments, then use the checklists below to fill in the gaps.

1. Decide your work arrangement first

Employee, independent contractor, and employer are three different roles, not interchangeable job titles. Your arrangement decides who handles tax withholding, which business costs you carry, and what a slow week costs you. A salon cannot settle your status just by calling you a contractor; the actual working relationship matters.

Plan it

  • Write down who sets your prices, who controls how the work is done, and who supplies the tools.
  • List every cost you would carry yourself: supplies, booking software, card fees, insurance, licensing.
  • Compare a commission offer with a rental fee using your real numbers, not the percentage on the flyer.
  • If the arrangement is unclear, get qualified tax or legal guidance before signing anything.

2. Plan your money around irregular income

A great Saturday doesn't erase a quiet Tuesday. Your client payments have several jobs: delivering the service, keeping the business running, funding your tax reserve, and paying you. Treating the full deposit like personal income makes a busy month look healthier than it is.

Plan it

  • Add up your monthly fixed costs: rent, software, insurance, supplies, and recurring bills.
  • Set the take-home income you need, then work out the revenue required to support it.
  • Price each service for time, overhead, and profit, not just the bottle of product it uses.
  • Build a weekly habit: confirm income and tips, record expenses, check bills before paying yourself.

3. Plan for taxes before they surprise you

When nobody withholds taxes for you, the bill is yours to plan for. Self-employed workers generally plan for income tax plus self-employment tax, and estimated payments may be required. The standard self-employment tax rate is 15.3%, with limits and calculation rules that mean it is not simply 15.3% of every client payment.

Plan it

  • Open a separate business account so income, tips, and expenses stay visible.
  • Estimate your self-employment tax and decide what to reserve from each payment.
  • Record income and business expenses throughout the year, not at tax time.
  • Confirm your full situation with a tax professional before your first estimated payment.

4. Plan for the psychology, not just the numbers

A plan that looks sensible on paper can fall apart in the moment. You might know your pricing and still discount because saying no feels uncomfortable, or buy supplies after a cancellation because the purchase feels productive. These are patterns to notice, not flaws to hide.

Plan it

  • Write your prices and policies down so a pressured moment isn't making decisions for you.
  • When you change a price or spend after a slow week, note the situation and how it felt.
  • Look for repeats over several weeks rather than judging one day.
  • Try one specific change at a time and review whether it helps.
