The best zero-based budgeting apps, compared

Janell Borrero, MBA, MAFM, EA · September 1, 2026 · 6 min read

Zero-based budgeting means assigning every dollar a job until nothing is unassigned. Plenty of apps claim to do it; they differ mostly in how much work they ask of you and what kind of income they assume you have.

YNAB

The most rigorous implementation of the method, and the one with the strongest teaching material behind it. You assign every dollar deliberately, and the app is opinionated about it. It's subscription-only with a free trial, and it rewards people who enjoy the process. If you bounce off it, it's usually the upfront time, not the accuracy.

EveryDollar

The friendliest on-ramp. The free tier does manual zero-based budgeting well; bank connection and richer reporting sit behind the paid tier. Good if you want the method without the learning curve, less good if you need deep reporting.

Monarch Money

Strongest for households and net worth — shared budgets, investments, and long-term tracking in one place. It supports category budgeting but isn't built around the zero-based philosophy the way YNAB is. Paid only.

MoneyPOP

Built for people whose income arrives client by client rather than as a paycheck — stylists, nail techs, estheticians, freelancers, and small business owners. It keeps business and personal separated, shows cash flow and profit margin as you log, and adds a behavioral layer most budgeting apps skip: an Archetype Quiz that names your money pattern, a mood diary that links how you felt to what you spent, and Ella, an in-app assistant that answers questions in plain language.

The free plan covers the quiz, mood tracking, and manual budgeting with no payment required. Paid plans add bank sync and forecasting and are billed through your app store.

How to choose

  • Steady paycheck and you enjoy detail — YNAB.
  • Steady paycheck and you want the simplest possible start — EveryDollar.
  • Two incomes, a mortgage, investments to track — Monarch.
  • Variable income from clients, tips, or retail, and you need business separated from personal — MoneyPOP.
The best budgeting app is the one still open on your phone in March.

What actually predicts sticking with it

  1. How long a single entry takes. Anything over about ten seconds gets skipped on a busy day.
  2. Whether the app can handle a month where income arrived in fourteen pieces.
  3. Whether it makes you feel informed or judged after a bad week.
  4. Whether the free tier is enough to build the habit before you pay for anything.
