Is Rocket Money free? What you get, what costs money, and the alternatives

Janell Borrero, MBA, MAFM, EA · September 1, 2026 · 5 min read

Short answer: Rocket Money has a free tier, and it's genuinely usable. The parts most people download it for — automatic subscription cancellation and bill negotiation — are where the money shows up.

What the free tier covers

  • Connecting bank and card accounts to see transactions in one place
  • Spending categorized automatically, with a basic budget view
  • A list of your recurring subscriptions so you can spot what you forgot about
  • Net worth and balance tracking

What Premium adds

  • Cancelling subscriptions for you rather than just showing them
  • Bill negotiation, which typically also takes a cut of whatever it saves you
  • Custom categories, more budgets, and more detailed reporting
  • Credit score tracking and automated savings features

Premium uses pay-what-you-want pricing within a range, billed monthly or annually. Pricing changes, so check the current numbers in the app before you commit — and check how negotiation savings are charged, because that fee is the one people are most often surprised by.

Is the free version enough?

For most people, yes — if what you want is visibility. Seeing every subscription in one list and cancelling four of them yourself takes an afternoon and costs nothing. Premium makes sense mainly if you'd otherwise never get around to it, or if you have several negotiable bills like cable and internet.

Where it doesn't fit

Rocket Money is built around a salaried spender with recurring bills. If your income is variable — clients, tips, retail, contract work — the core question isn't 'which subscription can I cut', it's 'what did I actually earn this month and how much of it is mine to keep'. Subscription tracking doesn't answer that.

Cutting a $12 subscription feels productive. Knowing your real profit margin changes decisions.

Alternatives worth comparing

  • YNAB — strongest for strict zero-based budgeting; paid only, with a learning curve.
  • EveryDollar — simple zero-based budgeting with a limited free tier.
  • Monarch Money — good household and net-worth tracking; paid only.
  • MoneyPOP — built for variable income from clients, tips, and retail, with business and personal kept separate.

MoneyPOP's free plan covers the Archetype Quiz, mood tracking, and manual budgeting with no payment required. Paid plans add bank sync and forecasting and are billed through your app store.
